A sudden gasp for air.
Conscious, but surrounded by a white light. His vision remained hazy.
âHeâs awake,â a voice echoed in the background.
âOh wow,â a familiar voice said. âThat was one nasty fall.â
A cold hand touched the side of his arm as his other senses began to reactivate. He could feel his face was numb as a mask was straddling across his nose and mouth; an ache in his left arm became apparent as he noticed a needle forced into his vein; and most prominently, a throbbing side in the front side of his head and a graze on his chin.
âAre you with me, Jack?â the familiar voice said. âGive him some space, team.â
Jackâs vision became clear.
He could feel the soft, bed sheets wrapped around his legs as he looked around the room.
A hospital ward.
âOh, shit!â Jack said rubbing the side of his face.
âTry not to move,â a voice said stepping over him. âYou hit the ground hard.â
It was Matt.
âWhat happened?â
âYou fell hard, mate,â Jackson said, standing around the bed. âLuckily, you didnât hit your head on the side of that table.â
âI donât remember a thing.â
âThere might be a bit of memory loss,â Matt explained. âBut itâs only temporary. Itâs just from how you landed.â
âWhatâs the time?â Jack sniffled. He couldnât move his left arm to look at his watch.
âAlmost six,â Jackson said with a yawn.
âAre you kidding me?!â Jack exclaimed, contorting his body side to side trying to see who else was in the room with him. A male nurse stood at the sink next to the head of the bed and, sitting furtherer away from anyone else, sat Sean, trying to access the well-being of his new police accomplice from a distance. He stood from his seat and anxiously walked over to Jack.
âYou okay, dude?â he asked. He pulled back his long, blonde hair and examined the purple graze on his forehead.
âOh shit,â he sighed. âThat looks bad. Do you want to cover that up?â
âIâll do it shortly,â Matt replied, washing his hands in the sink. âBut I think youâll be okay.â
âOh shit!â Jack exclaimed trying to sit upright. âAsh?! Whereâs Ash?!â
âDonât worry,â Jackson said, trying to calm him down. âI called her earlier. I told her what happened. Sheâs obviously concerned, but she knows that we are here looking after you. I called Ben too. I tried to call Nikau but couldnât get hold of him.â
Jack tried to settle himself down.
âOkay,â Jack said nodding his head, looking down frustrated being hooked up to all these medical devices. âSean, could I speak to Jackson and Matt alone for a second?â
Sean was taken aback but understood. He knew how close Jack and Jackson were, both working side by side as pathologists for the past several years.
âI guess,â he said, staring up at Matt, trying to understand how Jack knew this young doctor. âIâll just be outside.â
As Sean sauntered towards the door with his hands in his pockets, Jackson pulled up a seat next to him.
âItâs happening again, isnât it?â Jackson asked.
